Keefe stories 16-22: notes for the grouping pass

233 records in s16.json to s22.json (chunks 679-911), one per scene, in chunk order. Stories: 16 Sammy Boy, 17 Simple Simon, 18 The Busher Reenlists, 19 The Battle of Texas, 20 Along Came Ruth, 21 The Courtship of T. Dorgan, 22 The Busher Pulls a Mays. Stories 16-17 are the last trench letters. From 18 on, Keefe is home and back at baseball.

Summaries give what really happens, not what Keefe claims. Where they differ, the summary says so. Examples: the invented "Marie" letters (683-711), and his "same salary" at $2,400, which is really a cut (775).

Recurring situations (plain words, example chunks)

  1. Someone above manages you by mockery, then steps into your private life. The person in charge teases, fines, exposes a flirtation, brings the wife along, or threatens to tell her. It is the spine of stories 18-22. 769-770, 782, 792, 800-801, 805-806, 815, 818, 837-838, 884, 888, 897, 900.
  2. Holding out for more pay with no leverage. He names a figure, lowers it, is offered less, storms out and signs anyway. Or he is made to earn the raise by winning one test. 751, 755, 761, 764-775, 810, 829-830, 839-840.
  3. Threatening to quit, or courting a rival employer who never bites. 744-750, 773, 802, 816, 836, 878-879, 889-893, 900, 902-911. It ends with him handed off cheaply to the worst club (909-911).
  4. Coming back from an absence expecting your reputation to open doors. 745-750, 753-755, 758-760, 738-739, 747.
  5. Colleagues' prank on a gullible member. Keefe is the butt in 683-711 (the fake pen-pal). Simon is the butt in 712-724 and 729. Keefe claims he was never fooled (717). The prank turns deadly (726-736).
  6. Married man tempted by an admirer. Wife or boss finds out. 682-707, 737, 740, 742-743, 783-807, 845-858. He always insists she pursued him and he was about to tell her he was married.
  7. Jealous of, or dismissive about, a wife who earns more and makes her own decisions. 751-752, 756-757, 810, 820, 824-829, 832-838, 842, 863-864, 899, 901.
  8. Drinking against orders, caught by someone above, blamed on "the stomach". 813-818, 877, 879, 882, 884-889, 897, 903-906.
  9. A brash newcomer who retells his exploits, mocked by veterans. Keefe does the same himself without noticing. 778, 781, 784-787, 796-797, 803, 811, 823-824.
  10. Blaming colleagues or luck for your own failure. 795, 817, 819, 835, 864, 867, 874, 880, 901.
  11. Boasting about a rival, then backing down when confronted. 749, 753, 849, 865-867, 821-822.
  12. Hanging back from a risky errand, then guilt when colleagues are lost, then volunteering to rescue one. 695-696, 699-704, 708-711, 724, 728-736.
  13. Boredom in a waiting role. Wishing for trouble to break the monotony. 680-681, 685, 693-694, 715, 722.
  14. Benched or passed over, demanding a regular turn. 809, 880-881, 896, 902.
  15. Go-between for a shy friend who misreads the reply as love for himself. The friend wins. 841, 844-846, 853-858, 862, 868, 876.
  16. Sure-thing schemes and big purchases on money not yet in hand. Car option, fixed-fight tip, betting on credit. 852, 860-864, 868-875.
  17. Homecoming to a changed family. News of a new baby, a naming fight, the wife's independence. 724-727, 741-743, 744-746.

Standing (rough, for staging)

  • 16-17: low. He is a private, pranked and ignored. He ends wounded and sent home as a minor public hero.
  • 18: out of work. He is rebuffed everywhere and comes back on reduced terms.
  • 19-21: rising. He is a regular starter who wins the opener and earns his raise. His home and money standing wobble.
  • 22: falling. He is benched for drinking, walks out, and is traded away to the worst club.
